A man who used to rescue marine animals in Southern California was shot by Las Vegas police after he allegedly tried to break into a car, authorities said.
Terry Rogaczewski, 39, of Las Vegas, who was in critical condition after being shot during the Nov. 3 incident, was released from a Las Vegas hospital and booked last week, the Las Vegas Sun reported. He now faces charges including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm into a vehicle and resisting a public officer.
About 9:30 p.m. that Saturday, Rogaczewski pointed a gun at a car as it entered the Town & Country Manor III apartments, the Sun said, citing an arrest report. The driver sped off and was not hurt, but several minutes later, Rogaczewski began shooting at a second vehicle as it drove into the complex.
The driver ducked and then drove in reverse, hitting a wall before running away, the report continued. Police already in the area responded after hearing the gunshots and found Rogaczewski trying to enter the passenger side of the second car.
Officers told Rogaczewski to show his hands but he turned around with a gun and aimed it at them, the report said. The officers fired, striking Rogaczewski several times.
He is scheduled to appear in court in December, jail records show.
According to a 1997 article in The Times, Rogaczewski once volunteered with a marine animal rescue group that trained sea lions for the movies "Andre" and "Stinkers." The part-time lifeguard and trained EMT helped with a high-profile rescue of a baby gray whale in Marina del Rey, an animal later taken to Sea World and named "J.J."
